Octopi Wins

Last week I was commenting somewhere (maybe Plurk) about the lifespan of bottom brackets, I summarised that Octalinks where OK, well blow me, I've just looked at the numbers and the unit in the Surly is 2,051 miles old with only a hint of a wobble.
It was ridden for all the rides between Feb and Aug 07 and again this week, so it's seen a lot of wet weather.
Compare this to outboard bearings and the wobble is about the same as a 500 mile old set of bearings, making the Octalink 400% better, and, to be honest, the cranks feel no less stiff.
Long live 2000-era bike products!

Just To Clarify - 26/29 speed and effort

Simon mentioned in the comments on yesterday's post that the 26" is the same speed as the 29er... well that confused me.. until today's ride, when, every hill absolutely killed me, which leads to the conclusion that for the same cadence a lot more effort is required as the front of the bike it constantly jamming itself into the rocks slowing the bike.
So, yes it's the sameish speed, but only if you put a lot more effort in (I reckon about 20%) to keep things even - given that the distance per crank revolution is pretty much identical between the bikes.
That doesn't mean 29ers are easier on the whole, they're just about the same as riding a 26" with XC suspension forks, on smooth stuff there's absolutely no difference but when the going gets rough and ripply, the 29er won't get stuck in the holes as much so you don't need to constantly fight your way over each and every rock - which, is a lot.

Rear brake still doesn't work, I half think that the seals are dead/jammed or the brake fluid's gone solid.. presuming there's any oil in there at all - I've not looked or 2 years. :)

Look Who's Back.. Back Again

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOAAA!!!! 26inch wheels are tiny! I guess this is what it feels like to be a *giant*.
After the framesnappage, once again the Surly is thrown back into action for it's 3rd of 4th Tour. It took a rather extended time to actually get the stop, go and sitting-on bits to work properly... mostly properly.. kinda properly.. ok, properly ENOUGH to ride. Suffice to say I had to choose the least broken Hopeless wheel, which still required 3 new bearings) and the most working Hopeless front brake.
Now, the bit where I compare 26" wheels and 29" wheels: SLOW SLOW SLOW. kinda, well it's different, the wheels certainly *drop* into the gaps between rocks, but on the other side, they seem to bounce more over rocks when you get some speed up. But overall it's a lot more work to hammer the bike around, I want my 29er back!
I admit it was a slightly unfair comparison, but the overall ride speed was about the same as the 29er but the ride was rougher and a little more unstable.
Overall though, 29er is smoother, the 26'er can actually turn in gravelly corners.
