Matt Takes a Detour

20 Dec 2007 at 14:10 Filed Under:

My brainless riding got a wake-up jolt today when a road was closed and I was forced into a seemingly never-ending diversion.

The closed road is probably about 1/2 mile, diversion, about 2.5 miles, up some slippery slippery roads, not much fun when the cold's making my ache like an old man

Chameleon Single Speed, Rivington

From the start of today my bike was making ungodle noises from the chain/cranks/somewhere area, I generally ignore noises now, I put it down to the sub zero temperatures, despite my bike living in the almost tropical 12 degree heat of my kitchen.
the growling noise never really went away, I knew it was the chain which was due for replacement about 500 miles ago. I was slightly shocked, but very amused to arrive home and find there were 3 missing teeth from the rear cog [lasted 2,208.01 miles]. I guess it's new chain day tomorrow.. hopefully I have a 17t cog somewhere.

On-One Groove Armada Cog

Apart from that, nothing happened, another 30 in the bag, 11 days to go. 10th day of frost and ice.

Found a 17t, too lazy to fit a a chain, it's looking very very frosty outside righ now (-4°c)

Yes, It's amazing it didn't slip once. I found a 17t with about 500 miles left on it, so, yay.

Diversions? On a bike? A bike with knobbly tyres? I always ignore diversions - it's one of the reasons I ride with MTB shoes on any bike.

I couldn't ignore the diversion as there was a road full of trucks in the way.
