HEY! I only got 50% Wet!

25 Jul 2007 at 14:30

It's a sad state of affairs when you class a dry ride as one where only your feet are wet, a reasonably dry ride is one where you feet and bum are wet and you don't need a coat, a full wet ride nowadays is classified as such if I need a coat and I leave soggy footprints in my kitchen after the ride.

Today was reasonably dry, but very windy (again - worse then yesterday), 27.7miles, despite feeling like I'd been pedalling for ages.

I missed out one hill today to save my knee, it helped, knee didn't REALLY REALLY hurt only REALLY hurt.

A high splatter day meant another set of pads magically disappeared. (bedded in somemake Organics - which are all I had) - they did last almost to the end of the ride, but I needed to scare lots of people into moving out of the way towards the end as braking was no longer an option for me. Oh and when did we start riding on the right of trails? KEEP LEFT?

Not a very good ride, my right knee blew up in the first 12 miles after battling the MF wind again, it rained heavily 3 times, the trails are very very bumpy now, I was really slow. blah blah blah 40.2miles.

Laps of the Pool

18 Jul 2007 at 13:00

Guess what time I went out on my ride?

Within 4 seconds of setting off the rain started to fall, by the top of the road I was putting my arm warmers on, 4 mins later I had wet feet, 25mins in I'd had enough of sliding around the roads, 27mins in the road was now a river and I couldn't see anything... this pattern continued as I did 4 laps of the local area to at least make the ride longer than 25miles.

How far I actually went remains a mystery at the moment as at around 55mins my bike computer drowned.

Is it wrong to be politically incorrect when you're about to be run over?

That was my thought after calling a Rover driver a F--king Spastic (amongst other things) and he decided that getting home to watch Countdown was more important than ACTUALLY LOOKING TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC BEFORE TURNING RIGHT. Moron.. I think I also displayed an effective way of connecting profanities the people coming out of the co-op in Adlington - sorry, but I was slightly angry about almost being assassinated.
I am sure if the bullet that blew though JFK's head had actually just ruffled his hair he'd have done the same. That's the second Rover in 3 weeks to almost squash me, and both times I wasn't doing anything illegal (for a change) - so Rover drivers now go on the list with 4x4 drivers and Mums doing the "School Run"

One Month To Go

14 Jul 2007 at 15:19

Only one month to go now

I'm wondering if I'll ever ride the Surly with two working brakes again. In the last 3 weeks I've had 2 days where the rear brake's worked properly, and the rest where I've been riding on backing plates or not working at all.

Even a swap of brake to my old O2 has failed: Ride1: brake develops no lever throw so it's either off or locked, Ride2: pulling the lever to the bar fails to do anything, Ride3: starts off like ride 2 ends like ride 1, so pretty much no braking.

My freehub also died entirely today luckly I managed to get to the top of the last hill before home before I pushed the crank and it tore all the teeth on the ratchet off leaving me with a double freehub! - I've almost run out of brakes and wheels for the Surly now.

I only got soaked from th waist down today - maybe that's from the feet up? although it did rain, so I'm keeping my record going.

MIlestone #4 of the Week

13 Jul 2007 at 18:45

The only milestone I could find for today was ride number 250 on the Surly.

It was a VERY VERY wet ride (and windy), but warm again (for this year anyway) so I didn't wear a jacket.

My rear pads yet again dissolved somewhere on Winter Hill, only two brake pulls into the ride. So the the majority of the ride was spent trying not to go to fast into loose / broken / muddy corners because front would cause crashing.

Im going to assume the pads, which were put in in April 2006 were organic and maybe degraded a bit.. but at least I made some pads last almost 15 months!

Despite the terrible weather, scary braking and shredded trails, today's ride was alright... I'd quite like to see the sun again soon, the great tanlines I had in April have been sanded away.
